We can be Heroes!

It was Saturday night and I had a hankering for a burger. Where to go? So many choices. I wanted somewhere I hadn’t been before, but heard good things about, so I headed down to “Heroes Burger Diner” in Hampton Park. This is an unassuming place, that is skewed towards a super hero theme and where the sign on the roof outside really needs a light!!

It had been a busy day and I was starving (what’s new?!), and wanted to make sure I did not leave feeling hungry. I ordered the “All Star” burger which came with beef patty, cheese, bacon, egg, house BBQ sauce, sweet onion, tomato relish, American mustard and tomato sauce. Then, rather than take the option to upsize it with pineapple and Beetroot (ugh!), I decided to throw in some southern fried chicken and a deep fried patty of mac n cheese too!! And yes, I may be growing a curly tail!!

While I waited I took the liberty of scoping out the burgers of the people around me and they looked good, so I was definitely looking forward to this experience. Finally, it arrived and it looked awesome! Especially with the egg yolk running down the outside. I picked it up to start my attack, and took my first bite, which was really just all chicken! Then I hit a bit of trouble. The slippery little sucker started to slide all over the place and I almost lost everything out the back of the burger, but I regained my composure, realigned my grip and continued on.

It tasted sooooooo good!! The meat was really tasty and the sauces, egg and bacon all worked well together too. In fact, the bacon was really fresh and there was plenty of it too! The added chicken was cooked perfectly and not too greasy, plus the cheesy goodness of the Mac n cheese made it even better. The bun was ok but not the greatest of all time as it was really buttery, but it did hold up until the very end, so I can’t be too critical. The only real criticism was that this was a seriously messy eating experience. Now, I know that I added fried chicken and Mac n cheese, but it was made worse because the chicken was on top and the Mac n cheese on the bottom. I would have preferred them around the other way. Chicken on the bottom would have made for a more solid base, and then the Mac n cheese would have run down the burger rather than be a mushy surface that all the other ingredients slipped all over.

Chips were pretty good, and I went a water with the meal, however in hindsight I should have grabbed a milkshake instead – something for next time!

Overall, apart from being a filthy mess, this was a really good burger, so it’s definitely worth taking the time to get down to Heroes……. “just for one day!”

My recent burger outings over the last few weeks have been to a few of my favourite places, which is great, but at the same time, I have also been wanting to get out and try somewhere new too, so I headed to “Burger Project” on Collins Street in Melbourne. Whenever I hear about this place, people always reference that it’s “Neil Perry’s” place!? Like that means the burger is automatically going to be good or something?! Well, for me, if the experience I had at his Rockpool restaurant is anything to go by (it ranks last on TGBC ratings), he has a long way to go to prove that he can cut it when it comes to producing a high quality burger. There was only one way to find out!

Located on the 2nd floor and almost the only place open in the newly fitted space, there is plenty of casual seats to park at while you chow down on your burger and plenty of burgers to choose from too. I got there a little bit early, so walked straight up and ordered. At first I couldn’t decide between the “Double” and “The Bacon Project”. I ended up ordering the “Double” which came with 2 X grass fed beef, cheese, onions, pickles, tomato, lettuce, secret sauce and I added bacon so I could enjoy the best of both worlds!! I resisted adding fried chicken this time as I wanted to see what the standard was like first.

Interestingly, despite eating in, the burger came completely wrapped in paper on a tray. I ripped it open and got stuck into it. First thing that hit me was how good the meat tasted! Mmmmmm so good! Then, something happened that changed the course for the rest of the experience. Only 4 bites in and the bun completely ripped open, with onions, pickles and sauce pushing up through the burger – “Not happy Jan!”

The patties were too big for the bun – or was the bun too small for the patties?? Either way, it was a problem. Plus the cheese was too small for the patties too and seemed to get lost. For me, burger etiquette states that the bun must be equal to or slightly larger than the size of the meat, and the cheese must be bigger than the meat so that the melted goodness can wrap around the patty and preferably run down the edges.

The general construction was poor. For example, the two pieces of tomato were stacked on top of each other, rather than spread out a bit. The majority of the ingredients were all sitting on one side of the burger – like it was made standing upright and everything fell through or something. Finally, the one piece of bacon I got was so small I almost thought it hadn’t been put in, but I knew it was there because the sweetness was so strong, it over powered the burger.

Chips on the side were actually awesome and I chose to wash it all down with a Strawberry thick shake too, which was also very tasty. Highly recommend both of these!

Overall, the ingredients were actually really fresh and tasty, but there was just a lot of things working against it, which made for what I would class as a “solid” burger. At less than $14 it was good value for money, so worthwhile giving it a go yourself. I did notice that by the time I’d finished my meal, there was easily 30 people lined up to order, so it’s obviously popular and maybe my experience is not consistent with the masses!! The only thing I know for sure is that it was definitely better than Rockpool!!! Well done Neil – a much better effort!!

Out and about in Croydon recently on a sunny, Sunday afternoon, when the lunch bells started ringing. I knew exactly where to go – Local Burger Co. This was the second place I visited and reviewed almost 2 years ago, so I was excited to be going back to see if it was as good as I remembered.

Now, anyone who follows these reviews regularly will know that my tastes have grown, and changed over the last 2 years. That’s not to say that I’m about to start throwing beetroot into my burgers – let’s not get ridiculous, but I have certainly become a fan of things that I never thought I would have in a burger. Therefore, returning to this place, I was keen to see how it stacked up.

Despite wanting to order “the big burger” again that I had last time, I wanted to have something different, so I ordered the “Beef, Bacon & Cheese” burger which came with premium beef patty, maple glazed bacon, American cheddar, lettuce, tomato, mayo and ketchup. I liked that they asked how the beef should be cooked, and I ordered it medium. However, the story doesn’t end there. Given I was so hungry and keen to throw them a test, I decided to add a second patty, extra cheese and fried, corn crumbed chicken breast fillet!

This burger was huge and looked amazing!! Standing taller than a beer bottle, the steak knife stabbed down the middle of it was barely holding this beast together, with the 2 pieces of chicken literally falling out of the burger. I wasn’t sure where to start, but I picked it up and started my attack. Basically the first few bites were just eating one of the pieces of chicken sticking out, then it was easier to start making some serious progress. The chicken tasted good but was a little over cooked and too crispy for me. The order of ingredients was all over the place too with lettuce on the top and tomato on the bottom – huh?! The worst thing was that a lot of the bacon was burnt on the ends, and it took over the taste of the entire burger. The bun didn’t hold up well at all either, with the bottom ripping within a few bites – although, I did super size the burger and add another patty and chicken, so it’s hard to know if the bun was built for that kind of pressure. The best part was actually the meat – it tasted really, really good and the cheese was on point too!

The other thing that I really liked, was the chocolate milkshake I had to wash it all down or should I say thick shake!? Awesome! Chips were just chips and nothing special.

Overall, it was a disappointing experience, and potentially because going in, my expectations were high. Perhaps I’m being a bit harsh, because the patty was really good, and I did decide to alter the menu by adding a few extras, but then I think a tasty burger should be able to “roll with the punches” so to speak and hold up under any conditions!
