Unbelievably, its been more than 2 weeks since the last review!! This time I have travelled north, into the Sunshine State of Queensland and tonight went to “Big Chief Flame Grilled Burgers” in Coolangatta. This is where you might say The Great Burger Caper (TGBC) began. Years ago, after being at the beach, I walked into “Big Chiefs” in Coolangatta and had the best burger I’d ever had – at least that’s what I thought at the time! It was this event that posed the obvious next question of “is it the best burger or not?” I wondered if there was better, and so TGBC was born!
So as you can imagine, after reviewing burgers for over 12 months, I was super keen to get back to the spiritual home of TGBC of “Big Chiefs” and see how it stacked up. There are plenty of burgers to choose from, and I ordered the “Big Chiefs Works Burger” which comes with 120gm flame grilled beef patty, BLT, cheese, egg, onion, pineapple and BBQ sauce. It also comes with beetroot, and being a hater of beetroot in burgers, I obviously took that out!
This is an excellent burger. The patty is really tasty, the ingredients really fresh and the flavours work perfectly together. It definitely hits the stop! However, by comparison and in all fairness, it’s more in the style of a fish ‘n chip shop burger than a gourmet styled burger, yet still holds its own.
Whilst this fantasy hasn’t had the fairytale ending you were expecting, with Big Chiefs topping the lot, it will go down in TGBC history books as one of the pioneers of burgers that helped bring into question the standard of every other burger.
If you are ever in the area, I highly recommend you get yourself into Big Chiefs to throw down one of their tasty delights – you will not regret it!
